Other regular characters included Sparky, whose full name in the movie and in Speed Racer: The Next Generation is Wilson Sparkolemew (in the manga and anime, he is only called Sparky), was originally named Sabu and is called Bujía in the Latin American version, the company mechanic, whose yellow shirt bears an "pid" that matches both his original Japanese name and the North American renaming. both in the anime and manga as a quirky young man who is a best friend of Speed and knows everything about cars. In the live action movie, he is portrayed as older than Speed but is still his close friend, and still retains the quirkiness of the original character. He is portrayed by actor Kick Gurry in the live action film. He makes a cameo in Speed Racer: the Next Generation.

Sparky is Speed Racer's mechanic.

Character traits

Sparky is very loyal to Speed, and does whatever it takes to help him. He will try anything from finding an essential auto part to riding with Trixie in her airplane to make sure thing run smoothly (and to get a front row seat at the show). He has been known to snoop around the competitors vehicles to get new ideas. Along with Pops, he knows the Mach 5 inside and out, and he makes sure it outperforms all other cars on the track. Sometimes this means making last minute adjustments seconds before the race begins.

Sparky assists Speed off the track as well. This sometimes requires him to put down his wrench and put up his fists, although not very well.

Sparky is friends with Speed, the Racer family, and Trixie.
